Early Modern Films at the BFI

By Karen Baston | 14 March 2009

The British Film Institute (Southbank) is showing some films set in the early modern period.

In Winstanley (1975, dir. Kevin Brownlow & Andrew Mollo) the Diggers try to plough common land and create the first commune in 1649 Surrey. The BFI is offering Winstanley as an extended run from 14 Mar to 19 Mar. See http://www.bfi.org.uk/whatson/winstanley for dates and times.

If you prefer your early modern history to be a bit more colourful they are also showing Barry Lyndon (1975, dir. Stanley Kubrick) on 17 March at 19:00. You can book here: http://www.bfi.org.uk/whatson/barry_lyndon_0.

The film on Winstanley was used in the 1980s as part of the Open University’s A203 course, Seventeenth-Century England: A Changing Culture, 1618-1689. Almost all my pupils thought it very poor with characters that could only be described as cardboard cut-outs.
