Our next academic event will take place on 21 May 09. Dr Eliane Glaser (Honorary Fellow, Birkbeck) will speak on ‘Rethinking Anglo-Jewish History: Cromwell’s Readmission of the Jews and English Law’, 6:30 pm, room B30, Malet Street.
You are warmly invited to our May paper, which will be followed by refreshments and discussion. Dr Glaser’s book Judaism Without Jews: Philosemitism and Christian Polemic in Early Modern England (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007) offers a stimulating revision of the traditional view that Cromwell’s readmission of the Jews to England in 1656 was the culmination of a Christian enthusiasm for Jewish ideas which had been gathering strength since the Reformation.
This paper is a departure from our advertised annual programme. Dr Glaser has kindly agreed to speak to us at relatively short notice because we have postponed Dr Roger Mettam’s paper on Louis XIV, scheduled for 13 May, as this date clashes with Prof. Julian Swann’s inaugural lecture. Hopefully Dr Mettam will be able to speak to us in October about Louis XIV’s France, fingers crossed.
Members free, non members £3 (membership £5).
