A One-Day Conference on 4 July 2009 in Honour of Dr Roger Mettam’ s Contribution to Early Modern French History, at the Institute of Historical Research, Senate House, Malet Street, London.
This conference brings together fifteen leading experts to re-examine the evolution of the Early Modern French State from the Renaissance to the Revolution. It will explore how power functioned in practice & investigate the events, crises & personalities that enabled the state to survive & flourish.
Papers will be presented on varied range of topics including Francis I & the Sixteenth-Century Wars of Religion, propaganda battles, court conflicts & religious controversies under Louis XIII & Louis XIV, gender & judicial issues & practices, social & welfare crises & developments, provincial administration, oppositional forces & international relations.
