A one-day postgraduate conference on science and the arts organised by the Institute of Advanced Study, Durham University

Friday, 25 September 2009, 10.00am to 5.30pm

Proposals for short papers of 20 minutes are invited from postgraduate students and
postdoctoral researchers working in any discipline. The following topics are offered as
an indication of some of the areas of debate likely to be addressed by the conference:

Imaginative conceptions of heaven and hell

Alternative life forms

Organ donation, brain death, and life support

Fictional afterlives in literature, painting, and film

Thanato-geography

Elegy and memoir

Fame and posterity
