Prof. Quentin Skinner, ‘Word and Image in the Philosophy of Hobbes’, Thursday 10 December, 6.30 pm, Malet St, Room B35
We are delighted to invite you to our end of term lecture. Prof. Quentin Skinner returns to the Birkbeck Early Modern Society, having given us a very stimulating evening three years ago on Machiavelli. Prof. Skinner is a world authority on seventeenth-century political philosophy, and his particular focus is on the work of Thomas Hobbes. His paper on 10 December includes a discussion of images and title pages, which promises to be fascinating. He has published widely, some of his best known works are The Foundations of Modern Political Thought, Volume 2: The Age of Reformation (Cambridge University Press: 1978), Machiavelli (Past Masters) (Oxford University Press: 1981), Reason and Rhetoric in the Philosophy of Hobbes (Cambridge University Press: 1996), Visions of Politics 3 volume set: Visions of Politics: Regarding Method Vol 1 (Visions of Politics): Volume 1 (Cambridge University Press: 2002), and Hobbes and Republican Liberty (Cambridge University Press: 2008).
After the lecture and discussion we will have our Christmas party in room B04.
Membership is £5 and can be obtained at any of our lectures, alternatively it costs £3 to attend a single event.
We look forward to seeing you tonight!
