I am afraid that this (and the dismissal of Naomi Tadmore at the University of Sussex) will prove to be the first of many more cases of scholars in the humanities losing their posts in the interests of so-called "balancing the books". Civilised countries treasure such scholars and ensure that they are not sacrificed when those in power misjudge economic circumstances.
