We’re looking for a manager with experience in developing software solutions in a library/academic environment for our UK-based software development team (4 staff). The company is experiencing significant growth at the moment and we see a lot of exciting opportunities over the next 5 years. To position ourselves to take advantage of this growth, we need to grow and develop our publishing platform as well working to improve the practices and productivity of our software development processes.

This position is for individual with 3-5 years of experience who would like the opportunity to take on challenging work and to further their career in management. You would work closely with our other software development teams based in the US and China and would be required to travel and potentially spend some time working with your colleagues in these other countries. You will be working alongside a peer group of very capable individuals and the behavioral requirements of the role reflect the importance we place on building an environment that challenges and supports personal growth.

This is a full-time position located in Stevenage, UK and offers a salary commensurate with experience.

Key Responsibilities:
Software development – Leadership and management of software development projects to meet business needs. Developing a shared understanding of the customer deliverables is critical and will involve close collaboration with peers across the company.

Productivity improvement – Identification of issues within the software development lifecycle and implementation of effective solutions that improve productivity, working with the other managers to ensure Best Practices are agreed and shared across the department. This responsibility encompasses all aspects of software development including systems, processes, communications and training.

Staff development – Leadership of a team of software developers, including responsibility for hiring, training, coaching, developing and inspiring them to growth their individual capabilities and, in turn, the company’s.

Platform Development – Identification of opportunities to further improve/develop the company’s technical platform to better support business strategy.

Skills/Experience Required:

Proven and successful track record in managing full SDLC in a LAMP based environment.
Experience of leading software development in agile environment
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong organizational, time management and project management skills
Experience in developing software solutions in a library/academic environment

The following skills/experience is highly valued, if not required:

Hands on experience in developing in the LAMP environment using MVC model
Working as part of a distributed development team across different timezones, countries and cultures
Audio and/or Video streaming
