Our Next Event! AGM and Dr Heather Dalton on ‘English Merchants in the Early Modern Atlantic’

Our second event of the academic year will be a talk by Dr Heather Dalton on ‘English Merchants in the Early Modern Atlantic: micro history through a wide lens’, Friday 4 November, 6.30, Birkbeck, Malet Street Room MAL 415. 6.30 pm,  Lecture, Birkbeck Malet Street, room MAL 152. Dr Heather Dalton, ‘English Merchants in the Early Modern Atlantic: micro history through a wide lens’

Heather Dalton is an ARC Early Career Research Fellow in the School of Historical & Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne. The focus of her current project is transnational relationships and family ties in trading networks in the 15th and 16th century Atlantic. Her book – Merchants and Explorers: Roger Barlow, Sebastian Cabot and Networks of Atlantic Exchange, 1500 to 1560 – was published by Oxford University Press in June this year and her chapter – ‘Portraits, Pearls and Things “wch are very straunge to owres”: The lost collections of the Thorne/Withypoll Trading Syndicate, 1520–1550’, in Early Modern Merchants as Collectors, edited by Christina Anderson, will be published by Routledge later this month.  Heather is also interested in early contacts between Australasia and Europe. Her article – ‘A Sulphur-crested Cockatoo in fifteenth century Mantua: Rethinking symbols of sanctity and patterns of trade’ – was published in Renaissance Studies in 2014
