About the Birkbeck Early Modern Society

We are a trans-disciplinary society whose members are interested in life during the early modern period, which we define as starting during the Renaissance and finishing with the French Revolution. We are interested in all facets of life at this time, and the ideas that were in circulation. Areas of particular interest are art and images, consumption, gender roles, literature, magic, politics, religion and belief, science, sexuality, and travel and exploration.

Our aims are:

  •  To organise educational activities, such as lectures and visits
  •  To provide a forum for students and staff to present papers on work in progress
  •  To throw the best parties!

Joining the Birkbeck Early Modern Society (EMS)

Membership: How to join us

Unless otherwise specified the charge for each event is: members free (membership £7), non-members £4

Please go to http://www.birkbeckunion.org/groups/early-modern-society to join the Early Modern Society or to buy non-member tickets online

Please email Laura Jacobs at bbkems@gmail.com if you have problems

We organise other events such as guided walks, trips to galleries and museums, and we hold a regular film night: the details of these events are e-mailed to members.

We are a non-profit making society, and the membership fees are used to finance the day to running of the society and its events, for example, paying speakers’ expenses, and providing refreshments at lectures. If it transpires that we have some ‘extra’ money in our accounts, we use this to provide special offers to members – for example, we have bought tickets for performances at The Globe, and then given these to members for free.

Membership is open to all and you do not have to be a Birkbeck student to join the Birkbeck EMS.
