The Birkbeck Early Modern Society (2006-2017) was a trans-disciplinary society whose members were interested in life during the early modern period, which we defined as starting during the Renaissance and finishing with the French Revolution. We were interested in all facets of life at this time, and the ideas that were in circulation. Areas of particular interest were art and images, consumption, gender roles, literature, magic, politics, religion and belief, science, sexuality, and travel and exploration.
The Society’s aims were:
- To organise educational activities, such as lectures and visits
- To provide a forum for students and staff to present papers on work in progress
- To throw the best parties!
The Society’s website started in July 2007 as a way of advertising our events and activities. It ceased in June 2017. The website now serves as an archive for the Society.
